Senior U.S. and Chinese officials reconvened in Geneva on Sunday, May 11, 2025, to continue crucial trade negotiations aimed at easing a trade war that poses significant risks to the global economy. The discussions, held at the residence of Switzerland’s ambassador to the United Nations in Cologny, involved Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. This marks their first in-person meeting since both nations imposed tariffs exceeding 100% on each other’s goods.

While specific details of the talks were not disclosed, U.S. President Donald Trump described the meeting as a “total reset” conducted in a “friendly, but constructive, manner.” He emphasized the desire for increased access to the Chinese market for American businesses

The choice of Geneva as the meeting location reflects Switzerland’s neutral stance and its recent diplomatic engagements with both countries. The continuation of these talks signals a mutual interest in finding a resolution to the ongoing trade tensions.
