MOSCOW, May 5, 2025 – Ukrainian forces have initiated a significant ground offensive in Russia’s western Kursk region, according to reports from Russian military bloggers. The assault marks a notable escalation in cross-border hostilities amid the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
Russian war blogger “RVvoenkor” reported on Telegram that Ukrainian troops targeted bridges with rocket fire during the night, followed by a morning attack involving armored units. Specialized mine-clearing vehicles were used to breach minefields, allowing armored vehicles carrying troops to advance. “There is a heavy battle going on at the border,” the blogger stated.
Additional Russian sources, including the Telegram channel “The Archangel of Special Forces” and state television war correspondent Alexander Sladkov, corroborated the reports of Ukrainian incursions into the Kursk region. Maps shared by these sources indicated Ukrainian forces attempting to penetrate the border near Tyotkino.
While Ukrainian officials have not confirmed the ground offensive, the Ukrainian military announced on Monday that its forces struck a Russian drone command unit near Tyotkino on Sunday.
In response to the escalating situation, local authorities in Ukraine’s neighboring Sumy region urged residents of Bilopillya and Vorozhba—settlements located approximately 9 to 12 kilometers from Tyotkino—to evacuate immediately. Ukrainian prosecutors reported that Russian shelling and guided bomb attacks in the area resulted in at least three civilian deaths and multiple injuries.
