A U.S. federal judge has scheduled a hearing for July 21, 2025, to address Harvard University’s lawsuit against the Trump administration’s freeze of $2.2 billion in federal grant funding. Harvard contends that the freeze and associated demands infringe upon its First Amendment rights and jeopardize critical research.
The Trump administration imposed the funding freeze after Harvard declined to comply with directives from an antisemitism task force, which included changes to governance, hiring, admissions, and the termination of certain academic programs. Both Harvard and the Department of Justice have requested an expedited ruling on the case’s merits, foregoing a temporary injunction.
This lawsuit is part of a broader scrutiny of universities by the Trump administration over issues ranging from campus protests to diversity and inclusion policies.
