Former U.S. President Donald Trump is organizing a large military-style parade in Washington, D.C., on June 14 to mark his 79th birthday, in what his team describes as both a patriotic celebration and a public show of strength. The planned event has sparked significant attention and controversy, with critics labeling it a political spectacle ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

According to the announcement from Trump’s campaign office, the parade will feature military-themed elements, including marching bands, flyovers, and veterans’ groups. Though no active-duty military units are expected to participate, the event will include symbolic tributes to the armed forces and emphasize what Trump calls “American greatness.”

The celebration is scheduled to take place along Pennsylvania Avenue, a historically significant route for presidential parades. Trump supporters are being encouraged to attend the public event, which will also be broadcast live on conservative media outlets and campaign-affiliated social media channels.

Trump’s spokesperson said the parade will honor veterans, law enforcement, and “the spirit of American freedom.” It is expected to include floats, musical performances, and appearances by conservative political figures and public personalities aligned with Trump’s platform.

This isn’t the first time Trump has sought a large-scale military-style parade. During his presidency, he proposed a similar event in 2018 after attending France’s Bastille Day parade, though the initiative was ultimately scrapped due to concerns about cost and logistics.

Critics of the planned 2025 parade argue that it blurs the line between national tribute and campaign rally. Some Democratic lawmakers and progressive groups accused Trump of exploiting patriotic symbols for political gain, especially given the timing during a heated election year.

“Using what appears to be a campaign event to simulate a military parade is deeply inappropriate and reminiscent of authoritarian regimes,” one critic told USA Today.

The city of Washington, D.C., has yet to issue full permits for the event, though coordination is reportedly underway between Trump’s campaign, private security firms, and municipal officials. The D.C. Metropolitan Police said it is preparing for large crowds and will work to ensure public safety, regardless of political affiliation.

Meanwhile, Trump has continued to maintain a strong presence on the campaign trail and social media, framing his upcoming birthday event as a celebration not just of himself, but of his political movement. In a recent post, he wrote: “We will celebrate America, the troops, the people, and our unstoppable mission to make America great again — again!”

With thousands expected to attend and opponents planning counter-demonstrations, the June 14 parade is likely to be one of the most visible and polarizing political events of the summer. The spectacle underscores Trump’s ability to command media attention while energizing his base with populist displays of nationalism and pageantry.
