On May 9, 2025, thousands of Romanians gathered in Bucharest and other cities to express support for the European Union, just one week before a crucial presidential election run-off. The rally comes amid growing concerns over the potential victory of hard-right nationalist George Simion, who leads in polls against centrist Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan
Simion, critical of EU leadership and aligned with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s MAGA ideology, opposes military aid to Ukraine and could shift Romania away from pro-EU policies. Protesters waved EU and Romanian flags, chanting against Russian influence and advocating for continued European integration. Many participants emphasized the personal and national benefits of EU membership, including security, better infrastructure, and educational opportunities.
Interim President Ilie Bolojan praised the advantages of Romania’s 18 years in the EU, while Dan reaffirmed his pro-EU stance and support for European defense initiatives in a televised debate. Simion, on the other hand, indicated he would veto EU military aid to Ukraine and prefers relying on NATO for defense.
Analysts warn that a Simion presidency could isolate Romania and destabilize NATO’s eastern flank.
The run-off election is scheduled for May 18, 2025.
