On April 27, 2025, over 30,000 mourners gathered at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome to pay their respects to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88. This marked a significant departure from tradition, as he became the first pope in more than a century to be buried outside the Vatican. His simple marble tomb, inscribed only with “Franciscus” and adorned with a replica of his plain cross, reflects his lifelong commitment to humility and service.
The funeral procession on April 26 saw approximately 150,000 people lining the streets of Rome as his casket was transported from St. Peter’s Square to the basilica. The route passed iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum and Roman Forums, with many attendees expressing deep admiration for the pope’s humility and connection with the people.
Inside the basilica, hundreds of cardinals gathered for prayers, while outside, visitors queued for hours to glimpse the tomb. The basilica, dating back to the 5th century, holds special significance for Pope Francis due to his devotion to Mary, Mother of God. It also houses a revered icon of Mary and golden rose offerings presented by Francis in 2023.
As the Catholic Church enters a period of mourning and reflection, preparations are underway for the conclave to elect the next pope, anticipated to begin after May 6. Cardinals will convene for a general congregation on Monday to possibly determine the conclave’s date, as the Church faces ongoing financial and ideological challenges.
Pope Francis will be remembered for his compassion, advocacy for marginalized communities, and efforts to reform the Church. His legacy continues to inspire millions around the world.
