Singapore’s long-standing ruling party, the People’s Action Party (PAP), has achieved a significant victory in the 2025 general election, securing 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats. This win extends the PAP’s uninterrupted governance since the nation’s independence in 1965. The election also marks the first national test for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who succeeded Lee Hsien Loong in 2024.
The PAP garnered 65.6% of the popular vote, an increase from 61% in the 2020 election. This result is seen as a strong endorsement of Wong’s leadership and the party’s policies amid global economic uncertainties and domestic concerns over rising living costs and housing affordability.
The main opposition, the Workers’ Party (WP), retained its 10 seats, matching its performance in the previous election. While the WP did not make significant gains, its consistent presence indicates a desire among some voters for alternative voices in Parliament.
Analysts attribute the PAP’s success to its strategic updates and the introduction of younger leadership under Wong. The party’s focus on economic stability and continuity resonated with voters seeking assurance during uncertain times. However, the PAP continues to face challenges in addressing the aspirations of younger citizens who are increasingly concerned about high living costs and limited political freedoms.
The 2025 election reaffirms the PAP’s dominant position in Singapore’s political landscape, while also highlighting the evolving dynamics of voter expectations and the importance of addressing emerging domestic issues
