In a high-level diplomatic engagement that underscores the deepening ties between the United Arab Emirates and Oman, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, met with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, the Sultan of Oman, during the latter’s official visit to the UAE.
The meeting, which took place in Abu Dhabi, marks another significant step in reinforcing bilateral cooperation between the two Gulf neighbors, both of which play pivotal roles in regional stability, trade, and economic integration. Discussions between the two leaders focused on enhancing strategic cooperation, bolstering economic partnerships, and supporting shared development initiatives across a wide range of sectors.
According to UAE media reports, Sheikh Hamdan conveyed the greetings of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and emphasized the UAE leadership’s commitment to fostering strong, long-term relations with Oman.
“Our historical relationship with the Sultanate of Oman is based on mutual respect, shared values, and a common vision for prosperity in the region,” Sheikh Hamdan said during the talks.
Both leaders reiterated their support for joint initiatives in key sectors such as logistics, energy, tourism, technology, and infrastructure development. The two sides expressed optimism about the potential for further growth in bilateral trade, which has seen steady increases in recent years. In 2023, trade between the UAE and Oman reached over AED 50 billion (approx. USD 13.6 billion), reflecting the importance of economic integration between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) partners.
Sultan Haitham highlighted Oman’s interest in attracting UAE investments to support the country’s Vision 2040 strategy, which aims to diversify the economy, enhance competitiveness, and create employment opportunities for Omani youth. The Sultan praised the UAE’s rapid development and innovative approach to governance, noting that Oman seeks to learn from its neighbor’s experience in digital transformation and urban planning.
On the sidelines of the visit, delegations from both countries signed several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering investment cooperation, customs facilitation, and energy collaboration. These agreements are expected to streamline cross-border trade and facilitate the exchange of expertise in renewable energy and smart city technologies.
The leaders also addressed broader regional and international issues, expressing alignment on matters of Gulf security, climate change, and sustainable development. Both parties stressed the importance of continued cooperation through the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and regional institutions to ensure peace and prosperity in the Middle East.
Analysts see the visit as part of a broader effort by Gulf states to strengthen intra-regional ties amid a shifting global landscape marked by geopolitical uncertainty and economic transformation. The UAE and Oman, while historically close, have in recent years intensified collaboration as both countries navigate new challenges and seek opportunities beyond oil.
Sheikh Hamdan and Sultan Haitham concluded their meeting with a reaffirmation of mutual trust and a shared determination to build on the historical bonds between their nations. The UAE Crown Prince expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to flourish and contribute to the region’s stability and progress.
The visit is expected to pave the way for further high-level meetings and joint ventures, solidifying the UAE-Oman alliance as a model for Gulf cooperation rooted in visionary leadership and economic pragmatism.
