Saudi Arabia has announced that the annual Hajj pilgrimage will officially begin on June 4, 2025, following the moon sighting that marks the start of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah.
The Saudi Supreme Court confirmed the date after observing the crescent moon on Tuesday evening. Accordingly, Eid al-Adha, the Islamic festival of sacrifice which occurs during the pilgrimage, will fall on June 6.
Millions Expected for Annual Pilgrimage
The Hajj pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam, draws millions of Muslims from across the globe to the holy city of Mecca each year. This year’s pilgrimage will be closely watched as the kingdom continues efforts to manage large-scale crowds and ensure public health following years of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Saudi authorities have stated that preparations are in full swing to accommodate an expected influx of more than two million pilgrims. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah said it has coordinated with various national and international bodies to ensure that pilgrims’ safety, transportation, and accommodation are fully managed.
Key Dates and Rituals
The pilgrimage will start on 8 Dhu al-Hijjah (June 4), with pilgrims heading to Mina, followed by the key ritual of standing in prayer at Mount Arafat on June 5. This is considered the most significant day of the Hajj.
The following day, Eid al-Adha will be marked by the ritual animal sacrifice, symbolizing Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion to God. The festival is celebrated not only by pilgrims but also by Muslims around the world.
Health and Safety Measures
Saudi Arabia’s health ministry has indicated that extensive medical services will be in place throughout the Hajj season. Dozens of hospitals and health centers are being deployed in Mecca, Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah.
There will also be specialized teams to respond to heat-related illnesses, given the hot weather expected in the region. Pilgrims are being advised to stay hydrated and follow all health and safety instructions issued by authorities.
Visa and Entry Procedures
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah reiterated that only those with official Hajj permits will be allowed to enter the holy sites during the pilgrimage period. The digital Hajj platform launched by the government has streamlined the visa process for many international visitors.
Saudi authorities have warned against attempts to enter without valid documentation, stating that violators could face fines, deportation, or bans from future entry.
Global Muslim Response
Muslim communities around the world have begun final preparations for their journey to Mecca. In many countries, departure groups are being organized through Hajj missions and licensed travel operators.
Religious leaders have urged pilgrims to maintain the spiritual essence of Hajj and observe the values of patience, humility, and unity during the sacred rites.
Conclusion
The official start date of June 4 confirms the beginning of one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. With Saudi Arabia readying itself to host pilgrims from every continent, the 2025 Hajj is expected to unfold as a major spiritual event and a critical logistical challenge — one the kingdom appears determined to manage with precision.
