Putin announces May 8-10 ceasefire

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a 72-hour ceasefire from May 8 to May 10, 2025, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II. The ceasefire coincides with festivities in Moscow, attended by international leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping. While Putin framed the truce as a sign of Russia’s interest in peace, Ukraine and its Western allies are skeptical. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy criticized the short-term ceasefire, demanding an immediate and longer-lasting 30-day truce. The U.S., under President Donald Trump, also expressed support for a permanent ceasefire, stressing the need for real progress in peace efforts. Following a recent deadly Russian attack on Kyiv, Trump warned of potentially ending American mediation if substantive steps were not made. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated demands for Ukraine’s demilitarization, de-Nazification, and recognition of annexed territories. The Kremlin insists that Ukraine must initiate direct negotiations, but Zelenskiy has maintained a legal stance against talks with Putin, citing Russia’s illegal territorial claims. Both sides blame each other for obstructing peace and manipulating ceasefires for strategic advantage.
