Pakistan defence minister says military incursion by India is imminent

Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, has stated that a military incursion by India is imminent following a deadly militant attack in Kashmir that killed 26 people. India has accused Pakistan of supporting militancy in the disputed region, leading to heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. Pakistan has reinforced its forces and is on high alert, asserting that nuclear weapons would only be used in the event of an existential threat. The situation has prompted diplomatic outreach to allies such as China, Gulf states, the U.S., and the UK to mediate.

India has taken retaliatory steps, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and restricting Pakistani airlines. Pakistan views the suspension of the water treaty as an “act of war” and has appealed to international parties, including the World Bank, to uphold it. The dispute stems from long-standing hostilities over Kashmir, where both countries claim sovereignty and have previously engaged in war. Pakistan denies any involvement in the attacks and calls for a neutral investigation.
