In a significant endorsement of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to facilitate the Hajj pilgrimage, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has lauded the Kingdom’s Makkah Route Initiative, describing it as a symbol of exemplary leadership in serving Islam and Muslims worldwide.  The initiative, which streamlines the pre-departure processes for pilgrims, was recently launched in the Maldives, marking a milestone in the bilateral relations between the two nations.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at Velana International Airport, President Muizzu expressed profound gratitude to the Saudi leadership for extending the initiative to Maldivian pilgrims.  “Their leadership of the Islamic world represents an exemplary model of giving, unity, and service, not only at the two holy mosques but throughout the entire Islamic world,” he stated.  He emphasized that the Kingdom’s pivotal role in leading with wisdom and mercy in serving Islam is evident through such initiatives.

The Makkah Route Initiative, part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, aims to enhance the Hajj experience by completing all passport, customs, and health screening procedures at the pilgrims’ departure points.  For Maldivian pilgrims, this means that these processes are now conducted at Velana International Airport, significantly reducing waiting times and logistical challenges upon arrival in Saudi Arabia.

President Muizzu highlighted the significance of this development for Maldivian pilgrims, noting that it is the first time they will benefit from such a pioneering initiative.  He acknowledged the generous provision of this service under the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Guests Program, which emerges from Saudi Vision 2030.  “We renew our great gratitude and appreciation for the leadership and people of Saudi Arabia,” he added, expressing hope for enhanced cooperation and joint work under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and his crown prince for the good of the entire Islamic nation.

The initiative’s expansion to the Maldives brings the total number of participating countries to eight, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkiye, Morocco, and the Ivory Coast.  This expansion reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to facilitating the Hajj pilgrimage for Muslims worldwide, ensuring a smoother and more efficient process.

Saudi authorities have emphasized the importance of the Makkah Route Initiative in enhancing the overall Hajj experience.  By completing essential travel procedures at the point of departure, pilgrims can focus more on the spiritual aspects of their journey.  The initiative also aligns with the Kingdom’s broader goals of improving services for pilgrims and showcasing its leadership in the Islamic world.

The collaboration between Saudi Arabia and the Maldives in implementing the Makkah Route Initiative underscores the strong ties between the two nations.  It also highlights the Kingdom’s dedication to supporting Muslim communities globally, ensuring that the sacred journey of Hajj is accessible and manageable for all.

As the Hajj season approaches, the successful implementation of the Makkah Route Initiative in the Maldives sets a precedent for other countries seeking to enhance their pilgrims’ experiences.  It demonstrates the potential of international cooperation in facilitating religious practices and underscores Saudi Arabia’s role as a leader in the Islamic world.
