Newly erected holding tents for detained migrants are seen at the United States' Naval Station Guantanamo Bay in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, February 21, 2025

U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy has ordered the Trump administration to disclose the identities of migrants recently deported from the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay to El Salvador. The judge aims to determine whether these deportations violated a court order he issued in March 2025, which restricted the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from rapidly deporting migrants without allowing them to raise concerns about their safety or potential torture.

The administration contends that the deportations, carried out by the Department of Defense (DoD), did not breach the court order since DHS did not directly coordinate them. However, Judge Murphy questioned the separation of responsibilities and the DoD’s authority to conduct deportations independently of DHS. The deported individuals include alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

This case highlights ongoing legal scrutiny over the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement tactics and the use of military resources in deportation operations.
