Israel strikes southern Beirut shortly after issuing forced evacuation order

In the past 24 hours, Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 71 Palestinians in Gaza, according to local health authorities. The attacks targeted civilian areas, including a tent camp for displaced persons, and have been described as “horrific crimes” by Gaza officials. This escalation follows Israel’s complete blockade of Gaza since March 2, 2025, which has led to severe shortages of food and medical supplies for the enclave’s 2.3 million residents.

The United Nations and Palestinian representatives have argued that Israel, as an occupying power, is legally obligated to facilitate aid delivery to Gaza. Since the blockade began, humanitarian organizations have been unable to deliver essential supplies, and the World Food Programme has exhausted its food stocks in the region. Israel defends the blockade, citing security concerns and the need to prevent Hamas from exploiting aid channels.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has commenced hearings on the legality of Israel’s actions, with a final advisory opinion expected in several months. While ICJ opinions are not legally binding, they carry significant political weight and could influence international pressure on Israel to alter its policies.
