On May 13, 2025, India expelled a Pakistani diplomat stationed at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, declaring him persona non grata for engaging in activities inconsistent with his diplomatic status. The diplomat was given 24 hours to leave the country.

This expulsion follows a period of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, sparked by a deadly terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militants, leading to military exchanges between the two nations. Although a ceasefire was agreed upon on May 10, sporadic skirmishes have continued along the Line of Control.

In a national address, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India would resume strikes on “terrorist hideouts” across the border if provoked again. Pakistan condemned these remarks as “provocative and inflammatory,” warning of a forceful response to any future aggression.

Despite the ceasefire, incidents of violence persist, including a reported gun battle in southern Kashmir’s Shopian district on May 13, where Indian forces killed three suspected fighters during a search operation.

The expulsion of the Pakistani diplomat underscores the fragile state of India-Pakistan relations, with both sides maintaining a cautious stance amid ongoing diplomatic and military tensions.
