A large dust storm swept through Mildura in north-west Victoria on Monday, May 26, 2025, reducing visibility and prompting warnings for residents with respiratory conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the dust storm was caused by strong north-westerly winds picking up dry topsoil from drought-affected areas in the Mallee region. The storm arrived in Mildura in the afternoon, blanketing the area in thick, red dust and significantly reducing air quality.

Health and Safety Alerts

Victoria’s Environment Protection Authority (EPA) issued an air quality warning for the region, advising people with asthma, respiratory issues, or heart conditions to stay indoors and keep windows closed.

Local authorities also warned drivers to take extra caution on the roads due to low visibility and slippery conditions caused by dust settling on road surfaces.

Public Reaction and Impact

Residents reported experiencing breathing difficulties and eye irritation. Many posted images and videos of the storm on social media, showing streets, buildings, and vehicles covered in red dust.

“The sky turned orange, and we couldn’t see the end of the street,” one Mildura resident said.

Clean-up crews have begun clearing public areas and roads as conditions begin to ease.

Weather Forecast

The dust storm is expected to move eastward overnight. Weather officials said conditions should improve by Tuesday morning as winds shift and weaken.

Authorities have reminded residents to monitor updates from the Bureau of Meteorology and health advisories from the EPA.
