Israeli military operations in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 40 Palestinians on Saturday, according to reports from Gaza’s Health Ministry. The ongoing bombardment has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.
Amid the escalating violence, a high-level Hamas delegation is in Cairo for ceasefire negotiations. Mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and the United States are involved in the talks, aiming to broker a truce that would halt the hostilities and address humanitarian concerns.
The conflict, which reignited on March 18 after a brief ceasefire, has led to significant casualties and displacement. Since the resumption of hostilities, over 2,000 Palestinians have been killed, bringing the total death toll to more than 51,400, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Israel maintains that a substantial number of those killed were militants.
Humanitarian agencies have raised alarms over the worsening conditions in Gaza. The World Food Programme reports that food supplies are nearly depleted, with over 80% of the population relying on charity kitchens. Additionally, more than 3,000 trucks carrying aid are awaiting entry into Gaza, hindered by the ongoing conflict and border restrictions.
In the midst of these developments, both sides remain entrenched in their positions. Hamas has indicated openness to a long-term truce but insists on retaining its arms, rejecting Israel’s demand for Gaza’s demilitarization. Israel, on the other hand, continues to call for the release of hostages and the disarmament of Hamas as prerequisites for ending the war.
