Albania held parliamentary elections on Sunday, May 11, 2025, with Prime Minister Edi Rama seeking a fourth consecutive term leading the Socialist Party. Rama, in power since 2013, campaigned on promises of European Union membership by 2030 and highlighted economic growth averaging over 4% annually from 2022 to 2024.

However, his tenure has been marred by corruption scandals, including the arrest of Tirana’s mayor, Erion Veliaj, on charges of corruption and money laundering. Opposition leader Sali Berisha of the Democratic Party, a former prime minister, also faces graft charges, which he claims are politically motivated.

Public dissatisfaction is growing, especially among the youth, due to income inequality and ongoing emigration. Despite polls showing Rama with over 40% support, he may need to form alliances with smaller parties to secure a parliamentary majority.

Election results are expected by Tuesday, May 13.
