Lammy emphasized the gravity of the current security landscape, describing it as an “existential crisis for Europe.” He is expected to announce new sanctions targeting entities that support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This meeting follows recent visits by leaders from the UK, France, Germany, and Poland to Kyiv, where they backed Ukraine’s call for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire and warned Russian President Vladimir Putin of severe new sanctions if he fails to comply .

The UK aims to leverage these discussions to reinforce European security commitments amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. The upcoming summit on May 19 is anticipated to focus on securing a new defense agreement and improving post-Brexit trade relations between the UK and the EU .
