On May 10, 2025, Turkey expressed its readiness to participate in monitoring a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, signaling a deepening role in international efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict. This announcement came during a “coalition of the willing” call involving leaders from the UK, France, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine. The coalition agreed on an unconditional 30-day ceasefire starting May 12, backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned Russian President Vladimir Putin of severe sanctions for non-compliance.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized Turkey’s commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and expressed Ankara’s willingness to observe the ceasefire if it is implemented. It has provided military support to Ukraine while opposing sanctions on Russia, positioning itself as a potential mediator in the conflict. In March, Turkey’s defense ministry indicated openness to contributing to a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine if a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia is declared. Last month, Ukrainian, British, … , and Turkish military representatives met in … in anticipation of a ceasefire.

Turkey’s involvement in monitoring the ceasefire could be pivotal in ensuring its implementation and building trust among the conflicting parties. The country’s strategic position and diplomatic relations with both sides may facilitate communication and reduce the risk of ceasefire violations.

The international community watches closely as the situation unfolds, with hopes that the proposed ceasefire could lead to meaningful dialogue and a resolution to the conflict that has gripped the region since 2022.
