On May 3, 2025, Israel publicly criticized Qatar’s role as a mediator in the ongoing Gaza conflict, accusing Doha of “playing both sides” and demanding that it choose between supporting “civilization” or Hamas. The Israeli Prime Minister’s office stated that Qatar’s approach undermines efforts to resolve the conflict.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry swiftly rejected the accusations, labeling them as “inflammatory” and lacking political and moral responsibility. Spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari emphasized Qatar’s commitment to mediation and criticized Israel’s portrayal of the conflict, comparing it to historical regimes that used false narratives to justify crimes against civilians.

Despite mediation efforts by Egypt and Qatar, ceasefire negotiations have stalled. Israel insists on the return of 59 hostages still held in Gaza and the exclusion of Hamas from any future governance of the enclave. Conversely, Hamas demands a full Israeli withdrawal and a permanent end to hostilities before agreeing to any hostage deal.

The conflict, which began with a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, resulting in 1,200 Israeli deaths and 251 hostages taken, has since led to over 50,000 Palestinian deaths and widespread devastation in Gaza. Aid groups warn of a worsening humanitarian crisis due to the ongoing blockade and military operations.

On May 2, 2025, Israel’s security cabinet approved plans for an expanded military operation in Gaza, signaling a potential escalation in the conflict. This decision reflects Israel’s stance that Hamas must be defeated and removed from power in Gaza.

As tensions rise, the international community watches closely, concerned about the potential for further escalation and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
